The CLSA welcomes the indication from Andy Burnham that “his instincts are not to reduce jury trials.” We hope that his review of the proposals will include removing the suggested restrictions on right to elect jury trial and removal of the automatic right of appeal from the magistrate’s court. We believe that all these measures would have serious consequences for the integrity of our justice system and right to a fair trial. We hope that upon review, the Prime Minister abandons these proposals and works with practitioners to improve the system and ensure access to justice for everyone.
