Sentencing Council: Publication of new and revised motoring-related guidelines

19 February 2025

The Sentencing Council has published a package of new and revised motoring-related guidelines. These can be found here alongside the consultation response document, which sets out the changes the Council has made to the draft guidelines it consulted on in 2024.

The Council has produced four offence-specific guidelines for aggravated vehicle taking offences, covering variations of that offence where dangerous driving takes place, where damage results, and where injury or death are caused.

The Council has also revised the offence-specific guideline for vehicle registration fraud, which dates back to 2008, to take into account changes in the law. Following responses to an earlier consultation, the Council is also publishing an overarching guideline for driver disqualification. There are further minor and technical amendments being made to motoring guidelines, details of which are all set out in the consultation response document.

As always, the range of views and expertise from consultees were of great value in informing the finalised guidelines. On behalf of the Sentencing Council, I would like to thank all those who responded to the consultation.
