Reflecting on Daniel’s Leadership
Daniel Bonich, a Partner at Clarke Kiernan LLP, has been at the forefront of the CLSA since 2020 – a time when face masks and virtual meetings were still part of daily life. Over the past five years, Daniel has guided the organisation through immense change, navigating challenges in legal aid, policy reform, and the evolving criminal justice landscape.
Under his chairmanship, the CLSA has made significant strides in representing and amplifying the voices of criminal defence solicitors nationwide. His leadership has been characterised by tireless advocacy, pragmatic optimism, and a deep commitment to improving access to justice.
“It’s been a privilege to lead the CLSA during such a pivotal time for our profession,” said Daniel Bonich. “We’ve faced more than our fair share of challenges — from funding crises to systemic reform — but what has remained constant is the dedication, resilience, and professionalism of our members. I know Katy will continue to drive the CLSA forward with passion and purpose.”
The CLSA extends its sincere thanks to Daniel for his outstanding service and leadership, which has left a lasting impact on both the organisation and the wider criminal defence community.
Welcoming Katy Hanson as Chair
Taking up the role of Chair is Katy Hanson, Managing Director at Welch & Co Solicitors in West Wales. With a wealth of experience in criminal law and a longstanding commitment to defending access to justice, Katy brings both sharp legal insight and genuine enthusiasm to her new role.
As Vice Chair, Katy has already played a central part in the CLSA’s initiatives to modernise communication, strengthen collaboration with partner organisations, and support members through ongoing sector pressures.
“It’s an honour to take on this role at such a critical time,” said Katy Hanson. “Daniel has set an incredible example of leadership through resilience and clarity. I’m looking forward to building on that legacy — continuing to champion our members, engage with policymakers, and ensure that the vital work of criminal defence solicitors is valued and supported.”
Looking Ahead
With Katy at the helm and Andrew Bishop stepping up as Vice Chair, the CLSA’s leadership remains in experienced and dedicated hands. Together, they will continue the association’s mission to advocate for fairness, sustainability, and respect for the vital role criminal lawyers play in the justice system.
The CLSA Committee is also looking to welcome more members to join them. Whether you’re newly qualified or have decades of experience, and whether you practise in a city centre or a rural court, your perspective and voice matter. The CLSA thrives on collaboration and shared purpose – and any criminal law solicitor from across the UK who wants to share their skills, ideas, and energy will find a a warm welcome.
As Daniel hands over the baton, the CLSA community extends its heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to him – and looks forward with confidence to the next chapter under Katy’s leadership.
