Representing Defendants on Remand: a survey

Transform Justice ( is a national charity working for a fair, humane, open and effective justice system. They are currently engaged in a project looking at the process for decision making at the remand stage in court.

This survey forms part of that work. It is aimed primarily at those who have direct experience of representing defendants in remand hearings but we would also encourage other professionals with experience of the criminal justice system to take part.

Findings will inform the development of recommendations aimed at improving the remand process and ensuring that defendants are not refused bail unfairly or in circumstances where an alternative to a remand in custody would be more appropriate.

The survey is short and they would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to answer the 20 questions on the basis of your professional experience and expertise. The survey is anonymous, unless you choose to provide your name and contact details for the purpose of taking part in a short follow-up interview. If a question is not relevant to your experience, do skip it.
